FOOTBALL: Referee must have the final say on Henry handball incident

This incident has got the world talking, so here is my two pence worth on the Thierry Henry handball which killed off Irish dreams of a place in the World Cup finals.

The more I see it, the more sympathetic I feel towards the mightily unlucky Irish who gave it their all but lost out to a freak of a decision. The full-time whistle was followed by national and international outrage with widespread calls for a replay following what could be one of the most costliest decisions in the history of football. From media outlets like Sky, BBC and ITV to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, the out pour of sympathy for the Irish from football and non-football fans has highlighted how strongly the public feels about cheating of any sort, especially in football.

As a matter of principle then, one would expect me to be fully supportive of the Irish attempts to force a replay. However, I believe that once a few more days pass and the dust settles, everyone will move on and forget about Henry's deceiving act. I may be in the minority here but isn't it time to get real? Here are my arguments:

1) Until there is goal-line and video technology fully introduced in modern-day football, there will always be one boss out there on the pitch and that is the referee. For me, he must have the ultimate say on what he has seen and what has happened. As it turns out, he missed Henry's handball yesterday which means that the goal has to stand. Now, you can jump and shout and protest all you like but if the referee has had his say then its a goal. This simple principle, the referee being the ultimate decision-maker based on what he sees with his own eyes - and perhaps assisted by the linesman is currently in operation in football matches throughout the world. Furthermore, it doesn't matter what level the game is being played at, the rules are the same be it Conference league, Premier league, the World Cup final or a World Cup play-off match.

2) It leads on from my first point that the lack of technology at this moment, whilst arguably a bad thing, has -in my view - always led to controversial decisions in football. From the infamous 'Hand of God' by Maradona back in 1986 to Euro 2004 when Urs Meier disallowed Sol Campbell's late goal v Portugal and there are many more. So, injustice and cheating (sadly) has been part and parcel of the game but the referee's are human and have made mistakes. With all due respect to the Irish, I do not think they are the first team to be hard done by and in all honesty, they cannot expect special rules to apply to them when so many other teams have suffered in the past.

3) My final point relates to the nature of the incident. I certainly feel that the over-reaction is primarily due to the way in which Henry cheated. Say, for example that instead of handling, Henry dived and won a penalty which made the crucial difference. Do you think the reaction would have been the same? I doubt it very much. The principle is, however, the same in that the decision is to be made by the referee in a split second and often he/she may make the wrong call. The wrong call has been made many times but we cannot dwell on it.

So, to conclude. Whilst I'd love to see another fiery encounter between France and Ireland for a place in the World cup finals in South Africa this coming summer, I'm afraid to say I cannot see it happening. If the referee is to make the final call and call it as he sees it then that is how it will end, be it by luck, by nature or by cheating. Good luck to France, unlucky Ireland.

BOXING: Big Fight LIVE - Cotto v Pacquiao

Cotto v Pacquiao is being billed as the fight of the year

It's the boxing fight that has got everyone divided and in the early hours of Sunday morning (UK), expect fireworks when WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto steps into the ring to defend his title against the p4p best Manny Pacquiao. The bout to be held in Las Vegas is one of the biggest fights of the year and has all the hallmarks of a classic. Puerto Rican Cotto lost his unbeaten record to the explosive Antonio Magarito back in July of last year but came back to clinch the vacant title by stopping Brit Michael Jennings in five. However, questions have been asked about his durability despite struggling through a points win over Joshua Clottley in his last defence. In Pacquiao, he faces a man on the verge of greatness. The Filipino is coming off wins against Oscar De La Hoya and a brutal destruction of Ricky Hatton. His dazzling speed and neat footwork have impressed the boxing fans throughout the world and should be a great asset on Saturday night. The winner will be chasing a fight with Floyd Mayweather so victory for both is a must. Both fighters are fast, have great power and like to trade, which only points to a toe-to-toe battle.

A lot of you e-mailed me last week about David Haye and how boring you found his win over Nikolai Valuev. While the approach worked for Haye, it certaintly wasn't a boxing masterclass from the Cyprus-based Londoner. This fight, however, is bound to be thrilling for anyone remotely interested in tuning in to Sky Sports on Sunday morning. I don't think it will go the distance and reckon Manny Pacquiao will win by stoppage around the 8th round. What do you think? The umaronline.com poll this week is asking: What will be the outcome of Miguel Cotto v Manny Pacquiao? Get voting!

The big fight LIVE is on Sky Sports 1, Sunday 15th November, 2am : you can also follow the action of my twitter feed @ www.twitter.com/umaronline

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update:

Early hours of Sunday morning in London and I've just witnessed a boxing masterclass from Manny Pacquaio. The Filipino dominated the champion Miguel Cotto over 12 rounds before stopping him in the 12th and final to become the new WBO welterweight champion of the world. His dazzling speed and fast hands were a pain to Cotto all night who just couldn't move away from the blistering combinations. Pacquiao was rampant from the start and started opening up a lead over Cotto as the fight progressed. Round after round, he showed his domination by accurate combinations to which his Puerto Rican opponent had no answer. In rounds 8, 9 and 10 Cotto was on the verge of being stopped but held on for dear life and was saved by the bell. In the final round, the referee had seen enough and stepped in save the battered Cotto. It was a smashing win for the Pacman and sets up the possibility of cracking match-up with the only other man claiming to be the best p4p, Pretty boy Mayweather. Such a mega-fight is what the fans want to see. Lets want and see if the two camps can get together. On tonight's showing, if those two were going to battle it out in a super fight, I'd firmly back the Pacman to come out on top. He was simply amazing tonight.

P.s thanks for all the votes. 114 in total. Majority you backed Pacman with the win and 49% (including myself) backed him by stoppage - the right call. Thanks also for following the twitter commentary if you did. For more, keep reading umaronline.com

EXCLUSIVE: Pakistanis unite at the House of Commons as nation goes through phase of crisis, NUPSA joint press conference

Hope, belief and the will to succeed during these traumatic times should see us through.

This was the message from British Pakistanis as they gathered at the House of Commons to show a united front in the face of growing terrorist atrocities in the South Asian state. As I write this, a bomb blast in Peshawar is the latest in a long line of terrorists attacks which have included suicide bombings and attacks on Pakistani troops in North-West of the country. While Pakistan faces such testing times, Pakistanis in the UK remain resolute and committed to empowering the youth of today in serving their fellow countrymen. In a joint press conference held by the National Union of Pakistani Students and Alumni (NUPSA) and the Empowering Communities Foundation (ECF), the message of hope was intertwined with belief in positive change through a united Pakistani youth movement. Several panellists spoke of their vision of a brighter future in Pakistan. This was followed by a Q&A session before a tea reception led to the end of proceedings.

So, where were we.... It is of course not the first time I've covered a NUPSA event on umaronline.com. Last month, we had the NUPSA Freshers Dinner at the Pakistan High Commission, an evening bringing together Pakistani students and alumni from universities across the UK to one platform. Today was a little different for more obvious reasons, NUPSA has already postponed a charity ball in the wake of terrorist attacks in Pakistan and today the committee came out with the ECF to maintain their firm stance towards a bright future. The setting was ample in the circumstances and the speakers did their job. The NUPSA press man Faizan Rana had told me earlier that this was not a political conference and not a forum to debate a solution to the current conflict in Pakistan. Needless to say that by the time it came to the Q&A, the majority of the audience members had thought up their mini-speeches. It was less questions and more statements. The whole thing left me a little confused but order was soon restored.

My question (and it was a question) was based on the experience of having attended several press conferences and seen many organisations like NUPSA talk the talk but fail to practically deliver. So, how did this student union intend to put its plans into action on the ground level? From what I gathered, there was the slight possibility of a student revolution being advocated here. Clearly, to have an influence on the social and political structure of Pakistan, NUPSA has to do something practically viable. The aim, according to Faizan Rana, is to unite the Pakistani youth through various social networks around the world. If NUPSA can, over a period of time become a major force of students here in the UK, US and Pakistan, then the ability to lobby and actively get involved in the political process in Pakistan has not been ruled out.

Clearly there is a long way to go here. However, every single individual on that panel was committed in serving Pakistan to their best of their abilities. The organisation has around 26 Pakistan societies signed up from various institutions across the UK. They are growing from strength to strength and hosting regular events here in the UK and Pakistan. So unity, as highlighted in today's press conference can only be a good thing. There is a framework in place and the people involved have a vague ideas of where they want to go. As long as Pakistani youth in the UK are united and committed in helping Pakistan, the future of the trouble hit state is in good hands. The standard has been set, now can the Pakistani students rise to the challenge? Only time will tell.

As always, umaronline.com was there to cover the press conference. Here are some exclusive snaps and video highlights from the House of Commons. For independent journalism and commentary on news, sports and entertainment... umaronline.com

BOXING: Big Fight LIVE - Haye v Valuev

Can Haye do it? Haye v Valuev is live on Sky Box Office (photo - bbc sport)

Tomorrow night in Germany, British Heavyweight David Haye is aiming to become the new Heavyweight sensation by beating Russian giant Nikolai Valuev. The bout which is taking place at the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung in Nuremburg will be live on Sky Box Office (David v Goliath). It's an explosive match-up pitting the former undisputed Cruiserweight World champion Haye against the current WBA Heavyweight king Valuev. It promises to be one hell of a fight, considering this is only Haye's 2nd fight at Heavyweight and the man in the opposite corner is quite literally the 7ft 'Beast from the East'.

In the Cruiserweight division, we saw the Haymaker go over to Paris and destroy the home-boy Jean-Marc Mormeck in 7 rounds before dismantling Enzo Macarinelli in 2 rounds in a one-sided 'Battle of Britain' at the o2 in London. Haye is confident of putting on another show for the German crowd and aiming to bring life to a Heavyweight division which has been calling out for a saviour since the retirement of Lennox Lewis. While the task facing Haye in Germany is enormous, I have to agree with Jonny Nelson when he says that this is perhaps the more easier fight for Haye when it comes to winning a world title. The other titles in this division are held by the Klitschko brothers and fighting those two is something Haye can look forward to if he can pull it off tomorrow night. Valuev is an awkward customer who has never been floored and only lost once on points to Ruslan Chagaev. He was also, more recently, dominated over 12 rounds by Evander Holyfield in a fight many thought he lost, only for the judges to hand it to him. Winning of points isn't Haye's mantra as he plans to floor the Russian giant (surely an impossible task?)

Whatever you do, don't miss this one. It's the fight that has got everyone talking as the fight that can bring the Heavyweight division back to life. It will also liven up the British Heavyweight boxing scene which has been tarnished somewhat by the lack of World class operators. Haye, in only his 2nd fight in this division is going in for the kill. Can he do it? The umaronline.com exclusive poll is asking: What will be the outcome of David Haye v Nokolai Valuev? Get voting!

As always umaronline.com would like to wish David Haye all the best in his quest to become the WBA Heavyweight world champion.

NEWS: Secular British Muslims force Al-Muhajiroun to cancel 'March for Shariah', security concerns cited by Anjem Choudary

What a day. British Muslims for Secular Democracy (BMSD) were last night claiming victory in what was supposed to be a counter-demonstration against Al-Muhajiroun's 'March for Shariah' in Central London. The secularists, around 300 of them from different Muslim and non-Muslim groups set out their stance through various placards outlining their commitment to secular liberal democracy in the UK and as in doing so, distanced themselves from the rotten and extremist views of Anjem Choudary's Al-Muhajiroun (now operating under Islam4UK). Choudary, himself, was supposed to be leading a procession from outside Parliament to Trafalgar Sq. at the same time but having decided to change the location on Friday morning, called off the entire protest at around 1pm on Saturday. Instead, Choudary and his men were found preaching on the streets of Walthamstow. The sudden twist prompted the BMSD vice-chair to release a statement saying that 'This is a victory for those who support the values that define this country's liberal democracy'. In other words, they ran away.

Now, as far as other media outlets are concerned, they provide you the news as it is anyway but here at umaronline.com, I intend to give you a different perspective on what is happening out there. So, lets be a little more realistic. For those of you that heard me on the BBC Asian Network on Friday daytime (HERE), you will know that I was openly vouching for the secular democracy side in this debate (if you want to call it that). I encouraged Muslims to turn out in force because as Muslims in this country and belonging to this community, it is our obligation to stand up and fight extremism whether that be in the form of the BNP or Islam4UK. So, a day later, at Piccadilly circus, you felt Muslims hadn't got the message. There was a sizeable portion of Muslims out there but not a vast number by any means. The ones primarily active were the BMSD team but aside from that, there was a lacking Muslim presence. On a side-note, there were also other groups present. The English Democrats had around 15 people, there was also a group called 'Stop Islamification of Europe' (SIoE) and someone also mentioned the EDL. Now, I don't know what SIoE were doing there because it seemed like they were arguing in favour of how barbaric and evil Islam is, even accusing the secular Muslims of not being proper Muslims because they were not following what their religion teaches them (not sure about that one). Furthermore, as the name suggests, I wasn't really expecting them to be praising the role Muslims are playing in the UK. One of them even told me, 'we should stop the immigration of Muslims into Europe now', how realistic that is and how close that is to the BNP, I'll let you decide. So certainly, the turnout was poor. One of the BMSD members told me that the turnout at their protest has been affected by the news that Anjem Choudary was going to cancel his protest. I personally don't buy that. Muslims were either going to be out there in force or sitting at home, watching TV. It turned out they chose the latter which makes you wonder whether anyone actually cares about what goes on outside the 4-walls of their own home. Well, I certainly do. Despite the lack of publicity before the event, another reason cited by some for the poor turnout, there was certainly media interest on the day and I met many of my colleagues out there today. Most crucially, managed to get an interview with the don @ BMSD, Dr Shaaz Mahboob. Check it out below.

At around 3pm I called Anjem Choudary, asking him about the march and what went wrong. He invited me to Walthamstow and said his team will be there until 4pm. I dashed there, hoping to have a word with the 'Nick Griffin of Islam' (not my words). On arrival, the mood was quite sombre as Choudary and his clan occupied a field near a major supermarket and tried to lure in every passing customer. The media from Central London had arrived here too and there were lots of interviews and publicity for the man which is hardly warranted in the circumstances. However, I thought I'd join in the fun but crucially, challenge the ideology Choudary was preaching. The stance I had maintained throughout the week and certainly in relation to Nick Griffin's appearance on the BBC Question Time was that the only way to tackle extremism is to tackle it head on. The aim is to challenge these people on their ideology. This was achieved to a certain extent on Question Time, although Griffin was laughed at than rationally defeated. Here, the aim was to challenge Choudary and ask the questions no other person had asked. Now that does not mean asking about the recent form of Rio Ferdinand or Man United in general but focusing on the questions people want the answers to. So, the camera was rolling, the interview went great and although Choudary cited security concerns as being the major factor in the march being cancelled, I think few of the secular democrats would believe that. After the cameras went off, me and my colleague (a great assistant, Naveed Arshad) had a discussion with members of Islam4UK about their mode and methods of preaching. It doesn't take a fool to understand that holding up a poster of Buckingham mosque (as they want it to be) doesn't only alienate other people but is not the faith we both believe in. Islam is not about conquering land and building empires, it is about changing hearts and minds and the method of Al-Muhajiroun was in no way doing that. Choudary himself stated around 70 people had converted to Islam but that is irrelevant if you are scaring away 500 others. All this is, ofcourse, besides the point which is that we believe Choudary was tested with some of our questions and we certainly tried to challenge his ideology as best as possible. Obviously today, in terms of the the protests, the secular Muslims came out on top, simply because they stood their ground. However, this is not the end of Islam4UK and Anjem Choudary was adamant that his organisation have the solution for this world. As far as he is concerned, the protest will be resheduled and will take place. It now remains to be seen how British muslims respond to this extremist challenge. My message, get out there!

Here is some exclusive photo and video coverage from both locations. Watch out for the crucial interviews with Dr. Shaaz Mahboob and Anjem Choudary. As always, comments are welcome. For independent journalism and commentary on news, sports and entertainment, keep reading umaronline.com
